Sommerville Scholarship Application Form

Awarded in honour of one of Virtual High School’s most tenacious and dedicated teachers, the goal of the Sommerville Scholarship is to support students pursuing post-secondary studies. 

Eligibility Criteria and Scholarship Details

• Students must provide proof that they have been accepted, or conditionally accepted, to any college or university program in Canada or abroad.
• Applicants must have successfully completed at least one course from VHS within the past three years. 
• Applicants will be required to submit a letter to a local politician about an issue of personal importance. The goal is to highlight experiences, observations, and perspectives that may help persuade the politician to evaluate the issue. Students can submit a written letter (500–750 words) or a video (3–5 minutes).* 
• The successful applicant will receive $1,000 CAD. 
• One recipient will be chosen each year.

*Note: for the purposes of this application, you are only required to submit the letter or video directly to VHS, though you are more than welcome to send it to your local politician if you wish. 

Application Process

Applications are due on or before August 1 each year. Once the recipient has been selected, all applicants will be contacted on or before August 31. 

After submitting your completed application form, you will be prompted to upload your supporting documentation. Please be sure to include the following:

• Copy of acceptance letter to a post-secondary institution
• Letter to a local politician
