1smMs. Jaime Nobes has an exciting role teaching language, math, and science in Virtual Elementary School (VES) in addition to teaching SCH3U in Virtual High School (VHS).

Teaching is, for Ms. Nobes, her second career, one which she has been enjoying for the past 12 years. Her first career began after she earned her Honours Degree in Biology at the University of Waterloo. She spent five years working in Environmental Chemistry as a Senior Project Manager in Mississauga. This work included managing data and regulatory analyses as they related Ontario Drinking Water Standards and Ministry Standards for soil and water remediation.

She spent two years earning her Bachelor of Education and describes her present role as an educator as “one of the most fulfilling aspects of her personal and professional development because she really enjoys helping students develop their skills.”

After two years, she began teaching grade 7 and 8 science and mathematics before moving to her hometown of Peterborough where she began a new career at Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board (KPRDSB) in the secondary panel. Her work at KPRDSB provided an opportunity to work in nearly every high school in the board in a variety of classes – grades 9 through 12, in Special Education, in alternative school settings, and as an online instructor.

In 2014, she gained valuable experience working as a chemistry and math professor at Fleming College in Peterborough. This experience sent her in yet another direction with college-bound students in the science fields.

In 2015 she started working with VES and VHS. She says that it has been “an incredible experience to work with students from all over the world, breaking down barriers, while ensuring student learning and success.”

Most recently, she started a program called a School Within A College which is a dual credit program for twenty grade 12 students. This program provides students with opportunities to earn college credits while finishing their OSSD requirements. The experience has been rewarding for students and teacher alike, allowing Ms. Nobes to work with students from across the board as they celebrate the many milestones that come with earning credits, graduating, attending college, and succeeding in various other capacities.

Ms. Nobes lives in Peterborough, Ontario with her husband Kraig and two young sons, Kaden and Reid. They also have a 12-year-old golden retriever named Maddy. They enjoy spending time outside, boating, fishing, snowmobiling, biking, and playing hockey and lacrosse. They have recently taken up skiing and are finding more time on the hills to enjoy time together.

Ms. Nobes’ dedication to student success is evident every day. We are truly fortunate to have her on our teams here at VES and VHS! Thank you, Ms. Nobes!
