The time of year for post-secondary applications is quickly approaching!
To help inform students about an exciting post-secondary option, VHS is going live on Facebook with a representative of the University of Waterloo on Monday, September 24 at 4:00 p.m. ET. We will discuss various topics regarding the university, including admissions requirements, programs, and any other inquiries that students may have.
For decades, the University of Waterloo has been a top academic institution in Canada, educating some of the brightest young minds in the country. The university specializes in many areas, perhaps the most significant being the development of successful entrepreneurs. An astounding 31% of UWaterloo Master of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology graduates start a business within a month of graduating (“Waterloo facts,” n.d.). To support young businesses like these, UWaterloo hosts Canada’s most productive start-up incubator, the Velocity Garage. The Velocity Garage is currently home to over 80 start-up technology-based businesses in the heart of the Waterloo region. The university’s incredible support of young entrepreneurs has led UWaterloo to become the number one school in Canada for venture-capital-backed companies (“Waterloo facts,” n.d.). If you are interested in starting or have already started a small business, UWaterloo might be the right choice for you! UWaterloo also specializes in many other areas, including comprehensive research, co-operative education, applied health sciences, engineering, environmental studies, math, science, and the arts.
The culture at UWaterloo is not just focused on academics. Social issues, such as inclusivity and gender equality, are also very important at this university; 46% of their undergraduate students and 29% of first-year students in the traditionally male-dominated engineering disciplines are female (“Waterloo facts,” n.d.). UWaterloo was also one of 10 global universities invited to lead the UN Women’s HeForShe initiative promoting women’s solidarity and gender equality. UWaterloo is a leading institution in the development of the new transgender application form for Ontario universities and is home to Canada’s oldest LGBTQ student organization, the Glow Centre. Along with a focus on gender equality and inclusivity, UWaterloo welcomes students from all over the world as 20% of undergraduate students and 40% of graduate students are international (“Waterloo facts,” n.d.).
These are some other distinctions that the University of Waterloo holds:
- #3 best overall university in Canada (Maclean’s, 2017)
