Investigating the Impossible: Grade 9 De-streamed Science
September 7, 2022

For many, science helps us better understand the phenomena of the natural and physical world. However, science is so much more than merely a way to explain the countless amazing things that often seem to defy explanation. Science can also help us solve any number of real-world problems or issues!
In our newly launched Grade 9 Science (SNC1W), students will develop an understanding of key concepts across topics in the four main disciplines of science: biology, chemistry, physics, and earth and space science. From sustainable ecosystems, climate change, and electricity to the exploration of space and the nature of matter, students will apply their understanding to investigate everyday problems using the scientific processes of research, experimentation, and engineering.
Let’s check out some of the topics you can expect to cover in SNC1W!
- Have smartphones become waste disposal? You’ll look at the life cycle of smartphones, highlighting the environmental, social, and economic impacts of manufacturing, shipping, use, and disposal. To address the carbon emissions associated with smartphones, you’ll use the engineering design process to brainstorm solutions that will extend the life of the product. You get the chance to propose new designs for screen protectors, study the chemical properties of the elements used in the product, and investigate ways to extend battery life.
- Follow the life of two young farmers as they deal with ecological disturbances that affect the growth of their crops. Using indicators of soil heath and water quality to diagnose the problem, you can then propose a practical course of action that will potentially save the farm.
- Observe and analyse test results to help a young, aspiring scientist modify their solar water heater prototype. You can then use the data to make recommendations for improvements to the design of the prototype. What would you change? What worked? You must use critical thinking skills and a bit of engineering to find a design solution that is both practical and environmentally friendly.
- Create a prototype of a wind turbine blade and perform industry tests on it to determine whether it will stand up to the stress and wear of use. Write a report to communicate the findings of the testing, making sure to highlight the big picture or main idea and include any recommendations for improving the design of the prototype.
- Investigate the relationship between the luminosity and brightness of the stars you view in the night sky. Model this relationship using a flashlight, and record data that you can use to reinforce your conclusion.

To support the Ontario Ministry of Education’s de-streaming efforts, careful consideration was given to the design of the SNC1W course. All lessons were created with clear learning targets, opportunities for self-assessment, analogies, embedded concept checks, and discussion boards where students can work through their questions with their teacher. Units have been designed to build upon concepts throughout the lessons, thereby allowing students to grow in confidence as they work through the course assessments. Ample opportunities to practice each skill or demonstrate competency with a learning target are provided before students are evaluated on their work.
Our goal for the SNC1W course is to make studying science enjoyable for students of all academic backgrounds. If you’re ready for a course filled with chances to discover and innovate, be sure to register for the new SNC1W course today!

What Our Community Has to Say
School is very important to me, and even if sometimes I’d rather be doing something other than school, VHS makes it interesting and easy to learn.
Jean-PhilippeStudentLearning with VHS is great but my favourite thing about it is actually all of the activities organized for students outside of academics. Things like interesting (virtual) field trips, guest speakers, trivia games, giveaways, book club, etc. make the virtual high school experience interesting!
KarminaStudentThe most impressive point about the school is its support system … I feel they are willing to listen to and solve students' problems carefully and responsibly.
MunjungParentLooking back, the quality of the content and the resources that this virtual school provides has been massively useful in my studies. They are an amazing example of a very rigorous online school with dedicated staff.
FrédériqueStudentThis school is excellent and I would 100% recommend. This is also a great way for people to get an OSSD diploma even if not located in Ontario or Canada.
YoavStudentEvery person that I have ever communicated with at VHS, be it the teachers or administrative staff, has always been kind and super helpful in answering any questions that I have, making me feel like they care about me and my well-being.
CassidyStudentI think what I benefited the most from with VHS was working at my own speed. With VHS, I could spend a couple of extra days to understand what was being taught and have the one-on-one resources to help me if I need them.
GraciStudentLearn wherever you are! That's the best part.
JosephStudentI have my daughter enrolled at VHS and it is great to see her have the best of both worlds, completing courses at her own pace without compromising the teacher support she would have at an in person school.
DianaParentThey have the most amazing staff and teachers, and everything is so well organized!! You can tell they want you to succeed at whatever you're doing.
