Ontario University or College? The Choice is Yours
October 29, 2026

Applications are now open through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) and the Ontario College Application Service (OCAS), which means that application deadlines for many Ontario post-secondary programs are approaching. For Grade 12 students, this is an exciting time filled with important decisions about the future.
One of the biggest questions students face is whether to attend a university or a college after high school. While both pathways can lead to rewarding careers and future opportunities, understanding the differences can help you choose the option that best aligns with your goals, interests, and learning style.
At Virtual High School (VHS), we work with students every year as they prepare for university and college admissions. Having a clear post-secondary plan can help you make confident decisions and online Ontario high school courses can help you reach your goals, whether you're completing Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) requirements, upgrading marks, or taking prerequisite courses online.
University vs. College: What's the Difference?
When exploring post-secondary education in Ontario, it is important to understand that universities and colleges offer different learning experiences.
University Programs: Academic and Theoretical Learning
University programs generally focus on academic study, research, critical thinking, and theoretical knowledge. Students often spend significant time analyzing concepts, conducting research, and exploring subjects in greater depth.
A university pathway may be a good fit if you:
- Enjoy academic subjects and independent learning
- Are interested in research or theory-based studies
- Plan to pursue graduate or professional programs
- Want a bachelor's degree as a foundation for future opportunities

Many university programs have specific admission requirements, making Grade 12 university preparation courses especially important. Students who need a required course or wish to improve a mark before applying may benefit from taking university prerequisite courses online through Virtual High School.
College Programs: Practical and Career-Focused Learning
College programs tend to emphasize hands-on learning and career preparation. Students gain practical experience through labs, simulations, industry projects, internships, and co-op placements.
A college education may be a good fit for students who:
- Learn best through practical, hands-on experiences
- Want to enter the workforce more quickly
- Are interested in skilled trades, technology, healthcare, business, or creative industries
- Prefer career-specific training
Many college graduates find employment quickly in high-demand industries, while others continue their education through degree-completion programs or university transfer pathways.
Other Options After High School
University and college are not the only options available after high school. Depending on your goals and interests, you may also consider:

- Apprenticeships and skilled trades
- Workplace pathways
- Certificate programs
- Gap years
- Military careers
- Entrepreneurship or self-employment
- Industry-specific training and certifications
The best pathway is the one that aligns with your goals, interests, strengths, and career aspirations.
Can You Attend Both College and University?
Students sometimes feel pressure to choose between university and college, but the reality is that education pathways are more flexible than ever. Many students choose to combine both college and university education throughout their academic and professional careers.
For example, students may:
- Complete a college diploma and later transfer into a university degree program
- Earn a university degree and then pursue a college graduate certificate
- Use college programs to gain specialized skills after completing a degree
- Take advantage of transfer agreements between institutions
For many students, college and university education can complement one another and provide both academic knowledge and practical experience.
How to Choose the Right University or College
As you compare Ontario universities and colleges, there are several factors to keep in mind. You should carefully think about the location and size of the school, what programs and methods of delivery the school offers, what campus life would be like, what student services and support does the school offer, and what are the costs associated with that school for tuition and cost of living.
Many post-secondary institutions offer campus tours, which are a great way to explore options!
Students should also ensure they have enrolled in or completed the required high school prerequisites before applying. Online OSSD credits can help students meet admission requirements and strengthen applications.
Preparing for OUAC and OCAS Applications
With OUAC and OCAS applications now open, this is the perfect time to begin researching programs, reviewing admission requirements, and evaluating your options.
If you're still deciding between university and college, remember that there is no universally "right" choice. The best decision is the one that supports your goals, interests, strengths, and future plans.
Taking the time to explore different pathways now can help ensure you choose a post-secondary experience that is both meaningful and rewarding.
