Virtual High School (VHS) provides online high school courses to students in Ontario and around the world. We have grown to be one of the largest private high schools issuing Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) credits in Canada. VHS also operates Virtual Elementary School (VES), a private, non-inspected elementary school recognized by the Ministry of Education in Ontario.
VHS is located in Bayfield, Ontario, a picturesque heritage village along the eastern shore of Lake Huron. Teaching at VHS
In addition to our in-house staff, VHS has a team of highly talented teachers. Our teachers all work remotely to provide support to our worldwide student body. Teaching roles at VHS are flexible and can fit into any schedule. Teachers work with VHS to set appropriate course enrolment numbers and can decide when and how they log in each day. VHS has specific expectations for teacher communication and feedback to ensure we provide the best support to our students, and our team of department heads is there to support teachers every step of the way.

Assistant Department Head
Our Academic Team is growing, and we are seeking three (3) Assistant Department Heads to assist Virtual High School (VHS) Department Heads with course development tasks, academic and administrative services, and business development projects to help ensure students have an exceptional educational experience at VHS. As an Assistant Department Head, you will help manage courses, develop content and effective teaching strategies and may work periodically with School Administration teams.
We are currently seeking one Assistant Department Head in each of the following departments: Math (background in Physics is an asset), Languages, and Social Sciences.
What will I be doing?
You will collaborate with a team of educators to plan, coordinate, research, write and develop quality courses and innovative teaching practices that comply with Ministry of Education guidelines and curriculum requirements. You will develop and update course elements, including interactive activities, assessments, quizzes, questions libraries, etc., for your respective department(s). You will make use of your skills in Adobe Dreamweaver, HTML programming, and other tools and technologies while developing a solid understanding of our content management system (CMS) to develop and edit courses.
You will support students and teachers by assisting the Main Office team when needed. You will also uphold the integrity of course credits through the review of student work flagged by the Academic Integrity team. Opportunities will arise to provide feedback on school policies and procedures and to take initiative to solve problems, address issues, and bring up new ideas.
What skills will help me be successful in this role?
- Bachelor of Education or equivalent, with qualifications in one or more of the desired subject areas
- Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification or equivalent
- Experience with distance learning
- A team player with a positive attitude
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Familiarity with e-learning authoring software, Adobe Dreamweaver, HTML programming, or other related tools and technologies
- Experience working within a Learning Management System, especially Brightspace by D2L, an asset
